Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) Webinar

The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is a free summer enrichment program focused on improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health professions. SHPEP’s goal is to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of students underrepresented in the health professions and prepare them for a successful application and matriculation to health professions schools.

Health Professions Readiness & Enrichment Program (HPREP)

The Science Enrichment Preparation (S.E.P.) Program at UNC Chapel Hill is designed for talented and diverse undergraduates interested in pursuing the health professions. The S.E.P. Program targets first-generation, underrepresented minority, rural, and/or socioeconomically disadvantaged undergraduate students. It is an 8-week, honors level experience for rising 1st and 2nd year college students interested in Medicine and Dentistry. Scholars:

  • Engage in more than 150 hours of classroom instruction in physics, organic chemistry, human physiology and quantitative skills/biostatistics.
  • Attend classes and seminars in reading speed and comprehension, test-taking strategies, essay writing, and interview techniques.
  • Visit local health facilities and network with health care professionals.
  • Shadow a working professional in their health field of interest.
  • Receive a competitive stipend.

 

Johns Hopkins Summer Internship Program

Diversity Summer Internship Program (DSIP) was established in 1995 to provide a graduate-level independent research experience in biomedical and/or public health research to undergraduate students under the direct mentoring of established Johns Hopkins researchers. The ten-week program typically runs from the end of May through the first week in August. During this time, interns work one-on-one with faculty on research projects in their field of interest. In addition, interns attend public health awareness and professional development sessions. Students from underrepresented minority groups and those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who are interested in careers in science, medicine or public health are encouraged to apply. DSIP provides a stipend and housing near the Johns Hopkins Homewood Campus, as well as free transit to the East Baltimore medical campus.

Public Health Research in India- Summer 2020

Participants will spend a month (July 12-August 15) in Southern India traveling between major coastal cities, the central plains, and rural hill stations, as they explore the complex systems that shape health and wellness. Experts from variety of clinical and community settings will assist students in studying public health from medical, ethical, and cultural perspectives. Students will also develop self-awareness about their own experiences and expectations, as they work with community partners on the development, implementation and assessment of public health programs. Past community partners and field sites include:

  • A long-term care facility founded for people with leprosy,
  • A major medical university in an urban center,
  • A small government hospital in a rural hill station,
  • India’s oldest domestic violence agency,
  • An NGO that teaches living skills to people with disabilities,
  • An environmental education center.

Students will be immersed in daily activities of patients and providers, children and families, schools and teachers as they explore ways that social determinants (including race, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic status, gender and gender identity, mental health, sexual orientation, and geographic location) shape health status and quality of life in Southern India.

2020 Summer Biomedical Research Program (SBRP) at Brody School of Medicine at ECU

The SBRP is an intensive two-month research program that allows undergraduate students to conduct basic or clinical research in various laboratory at the Brody School of Medicine or the main campus. The program goal is to prepare the students to be competitive in a global multicultural world whether their aspiration is to join basic research or clinical fields. Therefore, in addition to performing cutting-edge research, the students participate in various career development workshops. The culmination of the program is a poster session where the students present the result of the research they conducted under the supervision of their very dedicated mentors.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF)

These fellowships allow eligible Carolina undergraduates to receive up to $3,000 to carry out original research for at least nine weeks during the summer under the supervision of a faculty research advisor. SURF Peer Writing Advisors are available by appointment to assist with application and proposal revision. These advisors are former SURF recipients who have received specialized training from the Writing Center. Applications are due February 1.

Summer Award for Research-Intensive Courses

A tuition award offered for students to enroll in research-intensive courses during the summer (Maymester, Summer Session I & II). The award covers in-state tuition for a three-hour research-intensive course for the student and also provides a $1000 stipend for faculty teaching the mentored undergraduate research course. Eligible research-intensive courses must involve faculty-to-student, one-on-one mentorship. For more information, click here.

 

Duke REACH Equity Center Summer Undergraduate Research Program 

The Duke Center for Research to Advance Healthcare Equity (REACH Equity) is now accepting applications for its 2020 summer undergraduate research program (RESURP). RESURP is an 8-week summer program at Duke University in Durham, NC from June 8-July 30 for rising junior knowledge of the causes and consequences of racial and ethnic disparities in health; introduce students to basic skills in clinical research and provide an opportunity to conduct a health disparities research project; provide an opportunity for students to shadow Duke faculty in a clinical setting. The deadline is February 17, 2020. 2.  Gap Year Opportunities!

 

Dermatology Internship

  • Dr. Bruce Glassman, a general Dermatologist in Alexandria, Virginia is seeking individuals interested in a medical career for our year-long internship and medical assistant position. The position is ideal for the typical “bridge year” student who is graduating or has graduated from undergraduate school and has not yet applied or been accepted to medical school. This elite program is now in its 16th year with most graduates moving on to successful careers as physicians or physician’s assistants.
  • This position standardly is available beginning May 2020 through June 2021. We currently have positions available for immediate hire. The position is a full year commitment to the physician. Please only apply if you are available for a twelve-month period of time.
  • Applicants will not be considered if they are currently applying for medical school to begin in the class of September 2020. Please do not apply unless you have completed your undergraduate degree by May 2020 or earlier.

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Medical Assistant in Dermatology office (Alexandria, VA):
  • Assist the physician with all patient care duties including triage of patients, scribing during visits using Electronic Medical Record (EMR) data entry, writing and understanding prescriptions and their uses, biopsy preparation and processing, preparing patients for surgery and assisting during surgeries, and helping with cosmetic procedures (Botox and fillers).
  • Assist patients by working with insurance companies and pharmacies, educating patients on pre- and post-operative care, calling patients with pathology results, and performing suture removals and laser treatments.
  • This opportunity affords the employee the opportunity to meet hundreds of patients per week, to develop the appropriate skills to further their career in the medical profession, and to learn the basics of dermatology.
  • The time commitment is approximately 30-40 hours/week.
  • The position is paying but more importantly the experience cannot be matched for someone interested in the medical field.

Surgical Assistant PAID Externship – Mebane, NC

Triangle Implant Center (TiC) in Mebane is currently hiring for the position of surgical assistant extern. TiC is a high-volume oral maxillofacial surgery center. The paid externship program is in its 11th year and has had great success in launching students to their desired health care professional schools. This opportunity provides great hands-on experience directly with oral surgeons, anesthesiologists, and patients, providing a fantastic opportunity for pre-health students seeking in-depth clinical exposure.

The position requires full day availability at least 3 days a week. This externship also requires a commitment of at least one year. **If you cannot commit to full days for a minimum of 1 year, please do not apply.** CPR/BLS/AED training is mandatory upon hiring, and will be provided by TiC if you do not have certification.

  • Assist anesthesiologist with IV placement, airway interventions, planned intubations, etc.
  • Provide post-operative care to sedated patients
  • Review post-operative instructions with patient escorts
  • Scan patient charts into the EMR system
  • Stock all anesthesia supplies in the operating rooms and anesthesia closet
  • Maintain and order inventory of office medications and supplies
  • Apply mathematical skills in converting and totaling drug dosages

SENS Research Foundation 2020 Regenerative Medicine Research Opportunities

The SRF Postbaccalaureate Fellowship Program offers recent graduates a gap year option where they can strengthen their research and communication skills in preparation for such opportunities as graduate programs, medical programs, and biotech positions.  The  Postbaccalaureate Fellowship Program includes assignments and training that hones writing and presentation skills. The 2020 Application for the Ronald E. McNair Scholars Program is now available. This is an excellent path to help you earn a Ph.D., pursue research, teach, and/or become a Faculty member in your field!

The McNair Scholars Program is a 2-year research intensive Program for students interested in pursuing doctoral studies immediately after college. The McNair Scholars Program provides students with an 8-week summer research internship (summer between junior and senior year), faculty mentorship, graduate school application and GRE preparation, professional training, exposure to cultural activities, and the opportunity to earn up to $5,000 in stipends.
