Meet with a Health Professions Advisor
As we continue to build the Office of Health Professions Advising at UNC-CH, we are incredibly grateful to the mentors and leaders below who have offered to volunteer their time to serve alumni of UNC-CH on their journey to achieving a career in a health professions.
Appointments are reserved for UNC-CH alumni only. For current students, please schedule your appointment here.
Please read the bios below and reach out to ONE for support. Requesting an appointment with multiple individuals will delay your time to connect with them, so please only connect with one of them using the approach below:
You will need to provide the following information when requesting an appointment. You will not be able to schedule an appointment until you have included all of this information in your appointment request:
- Name; Degree(s) and Graduation Year; Career goal (physician, MD/PhD, PA, etc.); When do you expect to apply to medical school or other health professional school?
- A copy of your resume that includes jobs you’ve had, volunteer/service activities (including approximate number of hours/week you spend at each one), and things you’ve done to get experience with clinical medicine and caring for patients (also including number of hours/week). If you don’t have all those activities included in a formal resume, a simple list format is fine.
- If you applied previously for admission to medical school and were not admitted and you are planning to re-apply, send a copy of your previous AMCAS or AACOMAS application and an update on the things you’ve done since you submitted that application. If you send that application and update, it’s not necessary to send a complete resume, too.
- Unofficial transcript from UNC and from any other colleges/universities you attended.
- The specific questions you wish to discuss.

Dr. Janne Cannon is a Professor Emerita in the Microbiology and Immunology Department of the UNC School of Medicine. She served as a member of the UNC School of Medicine admissions committee for 15 years as both a faculty interviewer and full member of the committee. Although retired from the committee, she continues to volunteer to advise aspiring health professionals at UNC.
Dr. Cannon will advise alumni seeking to become physicians, physician-scientists (MD/PhD), physician assistants or veterinarians. She will also provide counseling and help with reapplication for alumni who applied for medical school admission and were not admitted; she meets with all advisees via Zoom.
Dr. Peter H Gilligan is a Professor Emeritus of Pathology-Laboratory Medicine at the UNC School of Medicine and former Director of the Clinical Microbiology-Immunology Laboratories and Phlebotomy Services, UNC Healthcare. He served on the UNC SOM Admission Committee for over 25 years primarily evaluating and interviewing out of state applicants and as their liaison to the MD-PhD Selection Committee.
Dr. Gilligan will advise alumni interested in attending medical and physician-assistant schools, and MD-PhD programs.
